Description

   N.K D-01 is specifically designed for voltage regulation in alternator charging systems, as commonly found in automotive applications.

N.K D-01 provides a regulated voltage feedback system to monitor and compare the system battery voltage to an externally programmed set point value and generate PWM waveform to drive external N–channel MOSFET to control the average alternator field current in response to system load current.

N.K D-01 provides Initial Soft Start functions to eliminate engine torque.

.Functional Description

Power on / Down

Power is applied to UL8813 through the Vbat Pin (Pin 9). The condition of power-up and

power-down is decided by the IGN Pin (Pin 5). When the voltage at IGN Pin is above 0.7 V

(typically), the IC is guaranteed to be fully operational. When the voltage is below 0.7 V at

IGN, the IC is guaranteed to be in a low current standby mode.

 

Soft-start

When power-up, UL8813 will initially provide a fixed 31.25% duty PWM pulse on Gate

output Pin. Then the PWM duty will start grow up when phase rotation frequency is larger

than f2.and stop until Vset is reach. The PWM growing rate is the same as LRC.

 

Load Response Control (LRC)

The engine speed is sensitive to the increase in alternator’s loading. The torque applied to

the engine by the alternator is proportional to the alternator’s output current. When the

load increases, the belt is stressed and the engine can stall. The LRC function manages

temporarily this important variation of alternator output current, in order to limit the torque

variation. The time is measured at the condition that PWM duty grows from 0% to 100%.

 

Voltage Sensing

The alternator output voltage is sensed by the Remote Sense Pin (Pin 4) and Local Sense (Pin

3). The regulated system voltage (Vset) is determined by the voltage divider resistor values.

Normally the remote sense Pin determines the value at which the battery voltage is

regulated. When the voltage of the remote Pin is too low, a sense loss function allows the

local sense Pin to substitute remote Pin to determine the regulated battery voltage. In some

application the remote Pin is not used, and remote Pin must be connected to local Pin

 

Phase Input

The phase input signal is normally coming from one corner of the alternator's stator to

provide an ac voltage for rotation detection. If the frequency of this signal is less than the

phase rotation detection frequency (f2), the fault lamp base (Pin 8) will output high to drive

the warning lamp and the Gate (Pin 1) output duty cycle is restricted to approximately

31.25% maximum

 

 

 

Fault Lamp Warning

Lamp Base pin (Pin 8) is used to control the external MOSFET to drive the fault indicator

lamp. The fault lamp is energized during any of the following fault conditions:

No phase input on pin 6 due to slow or no alternator rotation

Phase input voltage on pin 6 is less than the phase detection threshold

Over-voltage on Pin 3

Under-voltage on Pin 3 with the phase input frequency being higher than the f3 frequency.

 

Under-voltage, Over-voltage and Load Dump

During an under-voltage condition, the fault lamp will turn on only if the phase buffer input

signal frequency is higher than the Low/High RPM transition frequency (f3). This is to ensure

that the under-voltage condition is caused by a true fault and not just by low alternator

rotation. To help maintain system voltage regulation during an under-voltage condition, the

output duty cycle is automatically increased to 100%.During an over-voltage condition, the

fault lamp will be turned on and the Gate (Pin 1) output duty cycle is restricted to

approximately 3.1% maximum. The threshold value of over-voltage detect fixed to 1.18*Vsv.

If the load dump detect threshold is exceeded, the fault lamp and the PWM outputs are

disabled to protect the driver, field winding and lamp

 

Field coil Device Protection

For low side application, When the external MOSFET fails to decrease the source voltage

less than field short voltage threshold (VThfsc<Vsource), A short circuit signal is send to turn

OFF the GATE, A short circuit signal is send. The short circuit control logic check the source

voltage every 30ms (130Hz). If the field short circuit is eliminated, the GATE output will back

to normal state. The Field short polling duty cycle is about 0.4%, (or about a 30.7us ON

pulse) at a frequency of 130Hz
